When I was a kid, we often went to a Chinese restaurant near my grandma’s house and I always ordered the same thing. Beef and broccoli, my favorite! Ingredients like soy sauce, and cornstarch, which are typically used in cooking stir frys, are off limits for me now, but that doesn’t mean I can’t recreate my favorite childhood dish into something much healthier! I think my version is even better than the original that I once loved!
Eating this way is a complete lifestyle for me, and I don’t think anyone should ever feel deprived. That’s why I strive to create easy, delicious recipes that remind me of things I once loved! This stir fry is amazing over my toasted coconut cauliflower rice. That’s how I served it! Hope you love this recipe!
What was one of your favorite childhood dishes?
- 1 cup coconut aminos
- 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 ½ tsp fresh ginger, minced
- ¼ tsp fish sauce
- ¾ tsp salt
- ½ tsp pepper
- 1 tbsp arrowroot starch
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 small white onion, sliced
- 1-1.5 lb steak – either top sirloin or New York steak, sliced thin (preferably grassfed/organic)
- 1 large head of broccoli, cut into florets (about 3-4 cups)
- ¼ cup water
- 3 scallions, sliced thin, dark green ends discarded
1. First, mix the sauce. In a small bowl, mix the coconut aminos, garlic, ginger, fish sauce, salt & pepper. Stir with a fork, and let sit while you cook the stir fry.
2. Heat a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the 1 tbsp of coconut oil to the pan. Once the oil has melted, add the onion and sauté until the onion is soft.
3. Add the meat to the pan. Stir fry for a few minutes, or until the meat is no longer pink. Place the onion and meat in a clean bowl.
4. Add the broccoli florets & ¼ cup of water to the pan. Cover the pan with a lid and let steam for 2-3 minutes. Remove the lid and let the water cook out of the pan. Once the broccoli is cooked to your liking, place it in the bowl along with the meat and onions.
5. Turn down the heat to medium-low. Let the pan cool off for a minute, and then add the sauce to the pan. Slowly whisk in the arrowroot starch. The sauce will thicken as it heats up.
6. Add the onion, meat, and broccoli back to the pan. Give it a good stir to coat the stir fry with the sauce. Add the sliced scallions and eat up!
