Healthiest And Strongest Hair EVER! – Part 2

posted in: Health

Losing your hair when it comes to illness isn't something that's talked about all that often, but as I've learned, the struggle is REAL. I know from hearing from so many of you that you've also dealt with hair loss in the past or are dealing with it right now. I get it, because I've been there too. After losing more than half of my hair twice throughout my life, and going through the super fun re-growing process (haha), I now have my the healthiest and strongest hair EVER!

Healthiest And Strongest Hair EVER! – Part 2

Earlier this year I shared exactly how I got my healthiest, strongest and longest hair ever after losing so much, and now that some of the products that I'm using have changed, it's time for a lil update for you all!

You can read part 1 of how my diet changes as well as adding in bone broth and collagen made a HUGE impact in now having my healthiest strongest hair ever, but I'll also share my journey here, for those that haven't heard it before.

To some, hair is just hair, but to me, it means so much more. I truly believe that our hair shows a much deeper look into our overall health. At least this was the case for me, as both times that I lost so much hair, I was FAR from healthy.

One of the very few pictures that I have of my thinning hair, which had started to grow back in, taken in early 2013

The first time that I dealt with hair loss was when I was 19 years old and on a chemo medication to help keep my Crohn's Disease in remission. Between the medication causing me to throw up throughout the day and loosing so much hair, I decided that it simply wasn't worth continuing to take it, so after a few months I stopped and started my first experience with re-growing my hair.

Back then, I knew nothing of the importance of diet and lifestyle, so my hair took years to grow back in, and I felt like it grew back even thinner and finer than it was before.

Fast forward to February 4th, 2011, when I had my entire large intestine removed due to the inability to control my Crohn's Disease any longer with medications. After that surgery I also developed adrenal insufficiency and around the same time, my hair began to fall out in clumps. I remember wondering if it would ever stop falling out.

My hair became so thin that my hairdresser sweetly convinced me that it was time to cut it, so in April of 2011, I cut my long hair to above my shoulders. This was an extremely dark period of my life, as I'd already felt like I'd lost so much, so losing my hair felt like yet another blow.

Fast forward again to February 2013, which is when I first changed my diet, and my body finally began to deeply heal from years of illness. I saw my hairdresser again the following month and as I sat in her chair, her jaw dropped and she kept saying that she couldn't believe how much new hair growth I had.

If you've ever gone through the re-growth process yourself, you probably understand just how awkward it is…but it was happening faster and faster for me. As my gut was healing from years of damage (you can also read about how I healed my gut), my body was finally getting the nutrients that it desperately needed, and I believe this is why my hair began to grow so fast. Even today, every time I see my hairdresser she can't get over how much hair I have!

Now I have my healthiest and strongest hair EVER, and it continues to only become healthier, stronger and longer!

Healthiest And Strongest Hair EVER! – Part 2
My naturally wavy hair now, which I've learned to LOVE!

I've experimented with a TON of different hair products since I shared part 1 of how I got my healthiest and strongest hair ever – some I LOVE and make a noticeable difference in my hair (especially my shampoo & conditioner) and have switched to, and some that didn't work at all for my hair.

I'll never pretend to be perfect, or that I use completely natural products, as that simply isn't the case. I only aim to be transparent so that you can learn from my journey. To me, life really isn't about being perfect.

While all of my makeup and skincare products are made with safer ingredients (thanks to Beautycounter + Primally Pure!)…my hair is highlighted, I get gel manicures, and some of the hair products that I use are far from natural, but I'm totally okay with that.

It's all about progress, not perfection.

So with that, let's get to the products that I use and LOVE!

How I Got My Healthiest & Strongest Hair EVER:

The Safer Hair Products That I Use:

Healthiest And Strongest Hair EVER! – Part 2

These are the products that actually make my hair healthier and stronger. I love them for not only being made with safer ingredients, but also because they actually WORK. If I'm gonna use any product, non-toxic or not, it absolutely has to PERFORM.

Daily Shampoo & Conditioner:

This is the shampoo & conditioner from Beautycounter that I've been using for the past 2+ years, and I'm OBSESSED. It's by far made the biggest difference in my hair, and I realized this even more so once I swapped out this shampoo & conditioner over the summer to try out the Repair and Nourish line from Beautycounter.

I had high hopes for these products, but after a couple months I realized that my hair wasn't glowing anymore, and it was becoming harder and harder to style. Finally it clicked that the only thing that I'd changed was my shampoo & conditioner, and as soon as I switched back to my beloved daily products (shown above)…BAM…my hair was back to looking and feeling amazing!

BONUS OFFER: Now through December 18th I'm offering samples of this Daily shampoo & conditioner as well as some of my other favorite products to my Beautycounter customers! If you want to try these products out for yourself, simply sign up for my Beautycounter newsletter for all of the details! I have yet to hear from anyone who doesn't LOVE these products as well!

I also just purchased the Smooth & Control shampoo & conditioner, as well as the Volume & Shape shampoo & conditioner to see how both of those work for my hair. I've heard great things about both (especially the Volume & Shape) so I'm excited to give them a try…although I'm not sure any products will ever top my love for the original daily shampoo & conditioner. As I said, I'm OBSESSED. 😉

If you want to go ahead and try any of these products listed above (or the hair oil mentioned below), rest assured because Beautycounter does have a super generous, 60-day return policy, as they want you to be completely satisfied. If for any reason you don't LOVE the products, you can always return them, even if they've been used! But really, be sure to sign up for my beauty-specific newsletter to get in on my free gifts!

Smooth & Control Hair Oil:

I just started using this hair oil last week, and I'm already in LOVE! It gives my hair such a gorgeous shine without weighing it down. I love that it's also made with safer ingredients so I don't have to think twice about using it! A little goes a LONG way with this, and I've found it's best if I only apply it from the mid-section of my hair to the ends, that way it doesn't add too much moisture to my roots.

Dry Shampoo:

This Dry Shampoo from Primally Pure is a LIFESAVER! It takes my hair from the gym to date night in less than a minute! This works better than ANY dry shampoo that I've ever used (even the chemical-filled spray versions), plus it's made with legit, easy to pronounce ingredients, and it won't leave any sort of white residue on your head. Uhhh…cause nobody wants that, haha.

The Not-So-Natural Hair Products That I Use:

Healthiest And Strongest Hair EVER! – Part 2

I'm all about choosing my toxins wisely. I believe that educating yourself on the products that you use is key to making the best decisions (check out consumer guides to look the safety of the products that you use), and ignorance definitely isn't bliss. The products below aren't made with completely safe ingredients (although the curling products are better than most), but I've chosen to use them for a very specific purpose. If I find a more natural version that works as well, I'm always happy to switch!

Curling Products:

Thanks to you who mentioned Deva Curl, I now LOVE my curling products that I've switched to since my previous hair post! My hair is naturally wavy and I was using FAR from natural curling products to help keep my wavy locks from becoming frizzy, until you guys stepped into help! I ordered every single product that was mentioned to me and hands down, the products from Deva Curl were the ultimate winners. I started using the Supercream mixed together with the Wave Maker (a dime sized amount of each) and love them both!

While these aren't totally natural, they do have MUCH better ratings on than the products I was using prior to switching, and they work way better! Win, win!

Deep Conditioner:

I've tried out several deep conditioners over the years, and always come back to the Bassu Hydrating Masque from Surface. Most recently I tried out the Bumble & Bumble Overnight Repair Masque, which I didn't love, so again, I went back to using this one! Although it isn't the best ingredient-wise, it is gluten-free, and I only use it approximately once per month and it makes a big difference in how my hair looks and feels – so it's worth it to me!

Nothing's changed with the hairspray that I use, as I still really like this one because it doesn't leave any sort of residue or crunchiness. I recognize that the ingredients aren't natural or safe (don't let any marketing fool you), but since I only use this a couple times a month, it really doesn't bother me.

I hope that you found this post for how I got my healthiest and strongest hair ever helpful! Have any questions or want to share any products that you can't live without? Leave them in the comments below!

Have you tried the new smooth and control or volume and shape shampoo and conditioner yet? I am trying to decide to try any of these or combo of these or just purchase the daily. I have the same hair as you and have not tried any of the BC hair products yet. What do you think?

Hi Julia! I just purchased both to try (although I'm honestly hesitant because of how much I LOVE the original Daily) but I've heard great things about them, especially the Volume & Shape! I'd go with your gut instinct on this one, and just know that you can return them within 60-days if for any reason you don't love them. 🙂

Do you blow dry your after after using the deva curl products? Also I find that on days I do not wash my hair I still have to blow dry to fix bedhead. How do you deal with that.

I honestly never blow dry my hair – I just scrunch it with water 🙂
